E Criteria

“identify methods of government intervention and describe how this intervention affects businesses”

Explanation

Given a case study or information where government intervention is taking place, can you:

1. state what type of government intervention is taking place: use of laws, use of taxation/spending or attempts to directly influence a business
2. describe how this method of intervention affects the way a business is run i.e. has the government intervention made any difference to the policies or success of the business?

Assistance

You need to do two things here.

Firstly, you must have a broad understanding of how the UK Government tries to alter things in the economy i.e. how it “intervenes” in the running of the economy. This is not too difficult - just a matter of memory.

Secondly, and more difficult, you need to have an idea of how such intervention helps or hinders the running of businesses. As far as this e-unit’s concerned you will find this information within the “markets at work” and “government policies” sections. This is probably one of the hardest E criteria, so make the effort to complete any related exercises within the practice section of this e-unit.
